I hear that the Department for Education and Employment (in the UK) are
sponsoring a project looking at "delivering" key stage 3 (lower secondary school)
courses through ICT and are starting with Japanese, Latin and Mathematics.

Apparently the trials are to take place in schools, teacher-mediated, and also
with individual learners, some of whom may be using the materials wholly
unmediated. The projects are due to run from January 2001 to August 2001.

Anyone have any more on this - and why they have chosen mathematics as one of the
trial subjects?

Presumably the choice of Japanese and Latin is because there are very few, if
any, suitably qualified UK teachers of those subjects ......
