I wonder if someone could help me with the name of a book. It is a
wonderful classic, almost a coffee table book on the representation
of data. I cannot remember either the author's name or enough of the
title to access it in our library catalogue.
It was heavily advertised on the back pages of LRB for a while
showing one of the many beautiful diagrams. The one featured
represented Napoleon's Russian campaign and showed on a single page a
map of the route to Moscow and back, time information, temperature -
the onset of Russian winter etc

The author also developed a measure for graphical display - a ratio
of information to ink used! I seem to recall aonly one mention of pie
charts, which are promptly dismissed! He also wrote a sequel some
time later!

Can anyone help with this horrifyingly vague request?
