That makes sense, Alistair. I'm just getting started in Instructional
Design and so don't know where I'll end up working yet. I'll keep Xerte in
my back pocket!

Warmly,

  ~Helen

I¹d suggest it might still be worth having a play with the TechDis sandpit
because non techie people like you and me can do some great stuff with Xerte
Toolkits and depending on your line of business the cost you might pay for
someone to host Xerte for you on a website may well be less than you¹d be
paying for commercial licenses for other paid for products.

Thanks, Tom and Alistair. I, being a non-techy, didn't realize there was
the need to have it officially installed on a server. I'm an independent at
the moment, so it sounds like Xerte is not the best fit for me right now. I
appreciate both of you taking the time to reply.

Warmly,

  ~Helen

Hi Helen
As Tom says there are different variants depending on you¹re your technical
expertise. The real strength in XOT is that you don¹t need technical skills
to use the Toolkits version but you do need someone (ideally your IT
support people if you work in an organisation) to install it on the server
for you. In that respect it¹s like Moodle or similar easy for non techies
to use once the techies have installed it. However if you want to get
started before committing to installing on a server have a play on the Jisc
Techdis sandpit - http://vle.jisctechdis.ac.uk/sandpit where you can create
an account. There are lots of guides to getting started on the
www.Xerte.org.uk <http://www.Xerte.org.uk> community site. Lots of Mac
users work with Xerte Toolkits.

Hi,

I'm very interested in trying out Xerte but I'm confused by conflicting
information. On a few external websites, it mentions a 3.0 version
compatible with a Mac. But here on the Nottingham site, I only see the 2.0
version, and nothing about a Mac.

When I downloaded the 2.0 version, I unzipped the file in my Downloads
section but then couldn't figure out how to actually begin running the
program. What am I missing?

Warmly,

  ~Helen
