Brian,
I know it's the hyphen that is causing the problem. According to what others have reported in the Google search link below, hyphens in database names cause issues which can be resolved by using the backticks around the database name. It's one of those charming quirks of MySQL. If you ever use phpMyAdmin to export a database, you'll see that it always uses backticks around database and table names when it generates the SQL.
Cheers

It's no so much the database name that causes the problem as I'm only using a simple name it's the hyphen in the connection string for the fqdn.
I'll have a look at this on Monday when I'm back in the office and post back my results :-)
Thanks
Brian

The script that creates the database needs to have backticks ( ` ) around the database name. The backtick character is on the same key as the ~ character.

You might also need to alter the scripts that connect to the database to include backticks around the database name.

Yes, I can use localhost but then on the last page where you setup all the settings such as url, admin password etc it fails at that point as well as it tries to store this in the database which again uses the fqdn and errors on the hyphon.
My boss uses php a lot so he might be able to help me sort it on this page but I'm just a little concerned that db calls are used on other pages that will cause problems when Xerte is in use.
What I'll try and do is sort it on this page and then post how we fixed it to the developers list to see where else it might need fixing

Just a quick check are you putting that FQDN for the MySQL host? Is the db on the same server as your XOT install? If so just use localhost in the mysql host field but run setup from the FQDN.

I realise that one is supposed to to fail but this problem is after this test that it fails.
I'll contact the developers list for help and to offer help.
Thanks

One of the test scripts is designed to fail, but if you can make /setup better feel free too.
