Yeah I know what you mean but trouble is when I think about my favourite
tools/apps very few are free at least not for the features I want/need! 

I'm not going to accurately add up the cost of the paid tools/apps - that
would be too scary! ;-)

What I will say as it might be useful when considering tablet apps etc is
that I hear lot's of people question the worth of apps in the £3 to £10
range because they seem relatively pricey in comparison to the free or
cheaper alternatives. However in my experience when you dig a little deeper
the one-off costs compare very favourably when compared to the monthly or
annual renewal of SaaS type tools.

Favourite tablet app: ExplainEverything

Favourite FOSS app: XOT ;-)

Favorite Cloud app: Google Apps

I personally wouldn't be without Snagit and Camtasia Studio but neither are
free! Although I believe there is now a free snagit for Chrome OS users.

lists: you know, those little tools that you wouldn’t be without for xyz
reason: IrfanView’s batch processing, for example, is one of mine

I'm not sure how you're going to keep that Googledoc organised in a
meaningful way so posting here for now instead but I'll explain why

For at least some of the Open Source stuff then AccessApps is poossible the
best solution because will all rud from USB and therefore portable

For tablets the range is endless e.g. see my collection/categories at

edshelf allows you to create your own collection and not just mobile apps
but web based apps too. Those that have already been added to the site are
quick and easy to add to your own collection. You can then add new apps e.g.
Xerte but these won't appear instantly. I'm still adding to my collections
but worth considering using the same site for your own?

Why not share a Google doc and then everyone can see what others are

 I suspect there will be a lot of duplication

Hi,

I’m doing some work with a new Science and Technology academy being set up
here in Nottingham: I want to compile a list of useful – and preferably free
– applications for them to consider installing for students to use. They are
going to provide a mix of desktop and tablet technology, so do you have any
particular favourites you’d add?

I’m thinking about all aspects of web design, multimedia, coding, graphics,
video, etc. If you could let me know your favourite tools in those
categories that would be great,
