I was being an idiot.
I added a wait and the text is indeed cleared as well.
I moved the target draw object to a persistent position and that did it.

User clicks on an object, the event is triggered and the text icon is displayed.
The scr draws a line on the text object the first time it is clicked.
icon.previousSibling.clip().lineTo(end_x, end_y);
The second time it is clicked, the text persists but the drawn line disappears.
