Good lad. Just say to yourself it always better second time round. It will help.
When I got into Flash stuff from AW, I was also stunned to find that text fields needed about half a page of code to set up.

I'll write off 3 months and restart the project.

It's better in Flex, trust me.

Not scrolling exactly.
Even if you specify _height and _width, without setting maxchars, the text continues to wrap and expand the input area downward.
In an effort to avoid using maxChars, (which I would like to, as this is a proto interaction) I added:
icontextentry.txt.multiline = false;
icontextentry.txt.wordWrap = false;
If I use multiline = false; the input box collapses to a single character width.
If I use wordWrap = false; the input box continues expanding to the right until it's off screen
I can't believe this is so complicated.
At least Flash could have learned one thing from AW.
Insert, drag to size, that's it.
;-)

Scrolling was it?
Would any engine-side support help?

Thanks Julian. That did it.
Still don't get it though.
If I create a new text object, I can see using setTextFormat, as it would be a "blank" object with no inheritance.
But if I'm using the default .txt object, it seems to use the properties applied in the icon, *except if there is no text in the field to begin with*.
And using setNewTextFormat seems to imply those properties are already there.
So to get a blank, single line, limited width, non-scrolling, non-collapsing, input text field with the correct font/size:
icontextentry.txt._height = 20;
icontextentry.txt._width = 300;
icontextentry.txt.background = true;
icontextentry.txt.border = true;
icontextentry.txt.type = 'input';
icontextentry.txt.selectable = true;
icontextentry.txt.maxChars = 40;
myTF = new TextFormat();
myTF.font = "Verdana";
myTF.size = 14;
icontextentry.txt.setNewTextFormat(myTF);
setFocus(icontextentry.txt);
What was the advantage over a regular text entry again?
;-)

Should it be:
icontextentry.txt.setTextFormat(icontextentryFormat);
In either case, no joy.
Set the input font and size in the LO.
No change. This is funny.

icontextentryFormat = new TextFormat();
icontextentryFormat.size = 12; // 12 point
icontextentry.setTextFormat(icontextentryFormat);
Does that do anything?

Yes, thanks Paul.
I was suckered by inspect showing "height" and "height" going blue in the code window.
So now if there is no text in the field to begin with, the box doesn't collapse, but the text is some tiny default, even if I set it explicitly in the icon.
This is quite the PITA for a simple text entry. I forget Flash really does suck in some regards.

Shouldn't it be _height?
>From Flash help:
_height Property
public _height : Number
Player version: Flash Player 6
The height of the text field in pixels.
Example
The following code example sets the height and width of a text field:
my_txt._width = 200;
my_txt._height = 200;
You might also try applying a CSS style that sets the font-size.

Trying the text icon.
icontextentry.txt.height = 20;
icontextentry.txt.background = true;
icontextentry.txt.type = 'input';
icontextentry.txt.selectable = true;
setFocus(icontextentry.txt);
Unless I have text in the icon to begin with, it collapses down to about 2 pixels high.
(tried textHeight too).

I dont think the text entries are set up to scroll: I use a normal text icon in such situations and set events on iconID.txt.onChanged

Doesn't seem to want to scroll when set to auto.
Simple example
0,0,100,100, match this, scrolling=auto, border=1, erase=1, exit=0
