Just before I try to clarify for you the differences between project wide
templates and Page Wizards can you let me know what exactly you are
describing when you say "Page Wizards don't work"? As far as I know they
work reliably, and are being used by a number of developers, so if you have
found a fault or problem with them I would appreciate as much detail as
possible so that I can correct the problem.

The desktop version of Xerte has a number of project wide templates these
are Case Study, Media Interactions, Menu, Page Templates, Presentation.
Project wide templates provide an easy to use interface for none technical
users, very similar to that provided in Xerte On-line toolkits. However
project wide templates take over the Xerte interface by providing their own
project wizard in which you select build a project by selecting page
templates from those available in that particular project template.

As a result of the above you can use the desk top version of Xerte to make
separate projects based on different project templates but you cannot
combine pages from different project templates in to one project. Nor can
you access the pages in a project template from the xerte icon based page
building interface that you are presented with when Xerte first opens.

Page Wizards are an attempt to overcome some of these restrictions so that
users who would like to learn more about how Xerte works can develop
projects in the default icon based page building environment whilst also
having access to a large number of pre-built page templates. The Page
Wizards at present only include pages that exist in the Page Templates
project wide template, plus some additional page templates that are unique
to the Page Wizards.

I hope at some future time to be able to include additional pages from some
of the other project wide templates e.g. Media Interactions though my main
focus is to keep the Page Wizards up to date with developments in the Page
Templates project wide template.

One problem in introducing new pages from other project wide templates is
that whilst most of the time the code to enable a page to work is stored in
the .rlm file, it can be that code that might be used by several different
pages might be built into the project file (effectively the .rlt file that
you get when you first create a project based on a project wide template and
before you add any pages to it). An example of this is the code that
supports the narration feature in the Page Templates project wide template.
This is resolved when using Page Wizards by adding the narration.rlm model
file to the Page Wizards project. This is discussed further in the Xerte
Wiki.

If you want to have projects that contain pages from different project wide
templates then you have the following options.

1. Create several separate projects each using a different project wide
template.
2. Get used to using the Page Wizards, learn how the various files (.xwd,
.xml and .rlm files) work together to deliver a page wizard. To get you
started look at a simple page such as a title page.
3. Try building your own Page Wizard for a page that you would like to have.
Creating your own page wizards is discussed in the documentation I have
produced for page wizards, down-loadable from the xerte wiki. Remember you
can use this email list to ask questions to help you in your learning.

I will do my best to help you to understand how Page Wizards work and how to
go about creating your own Page Wizards from existing project wide template
pages.

Kind regards

Johnathan
