[Xerte] Xerte 2.x Debug?

How is the debug windows supposed to work? I have a script in which a 
variable is set: quizMode = "review"
I want to verify the value of the variable, so I added 'debug(quizMode);'

The debug window appears, but it remains empty! I tried debug(1); 
debug("test123"); but the debug windows remains virginal white....
