There was a major discussion about this a while ago, and following that the forums never took off. My preference is the mailing list. If other people prefer the forums go ahead and use them. I subscribe to them via RSS so I see any new posts to them.

Please clarify: are you trying to tell me that posting on the forums is a waste of time because you use the mailing list for everything?
I get that you like the mailing list. Perhaps you have an allergy to forums. I don't know.
But there's no point in me trying to use the forums if *you* won't. I like having a help line I can call on when I have a problem that I need solved. But my problems are not on the same level as the majority of people who use this list and I suspect they'd appreciate me not clogging up their inbox with basic questions.
So, why aren't the forums used?
Please note: I'm not saying stop using the mailing list, I'm just saying that if there's a viable alternative I'd welcome the opportunity to try it.

Because we use the mailing list.

That forum does seem like a more sensible place to discuss problems than a mailing list. I joined the mailing list because it was the only way to talk to people about the problems I was having.
Why *isn't* the forum used? Particularly to announce updates and new releases etc.

Well there is an underused discussion forum available for everyone.

Because of 50+ messages/day? I've suggested before that it would be useful
to have a digest option, if Mailman allows it, and/or a separate
announcements list, for those who just want to keep in touch with Xerte
developments.
The trouble with unsubbing via the Mailman interface is that, AFAIK, you
need a password to get into it, and many folk (wrongly) delete their
greetings message on subscribing.
