[Xerte] FORUM or EMAIL

I put the forum up based on people asking for it here.

I don't go as far as John and suggest that we should shut this list down. I
do however, think there is a place for the forum in the same way there is a
place for the wiki.  We tend to see a lot of the same questions asked here,
primarily, I believe, because people are not so sure how to search the
archives before posting, and secondly if they do, the archives search is not
as 'pretty' with context highlighting etc and is more difficult to 'scan'
for your answer.

I think a lot of the traffic on here could be reduced by moving some of it
to the forum which is very obvious how to search and free up people from
answering the same or similar questions.  Once answered, if the same
question comes up on this list, it can then be quickly answered by pretty
much anyone here by providing a link to the thread on the forum.  As more
and more people subscribe to the list, I think it's inevitable that the
forum will be needed as the traffic on here will become almost unmanageable.

There is also an ATOM feed now that can feed the entire board (or sub-boards
as you wish), so I think the notion that the feedback would not be as
immediate is not the case as those that wish to subscribe to the whole site
feed can do so and see the messages as quickly as they would their normal
email.

I really value this email dissemination rather than a forum. I use forums
certainly -I have a problem and I go to the forum to see if someone else has
sorted it. So why do I prefer this email method even though I have to spend
at least 30secs/day tidying up my Xerte emails? 
One main reason is that with such a new and rapidly developing tool others
think of ideas which I haven't had the time or the inclination to think of,
I have a look at the subject titles and soon realise whether it is
interesting or not then when the final email comes in on that subject, as it
has all the previous emails embedded within it, I archive it to my Xerte
folder and delete all the others. I frequently forward the same songle email
to my staff too acting as a kind of gatekeeper. Because all the emails start
with Xerte in the subject it is a very simple matter to delete them. As
suggested I could automatically send all my xerte emails to that folder but
that would mean I being the person that i am, would never see them. this way
I am 'self forced' to spend a few seconds a day keeping up to date with
Xerte. long may it continue.

Thanks Dave and David,
As a new member of the list and Xerte I need to talk with people who are
interested in newbie issues but as I gain experience I would like to access
the more experienced users. A forum with different sections is a great way
to do this.....email lists are not easy to navigate or search. Thats all I
am trying to say. As a very small group we need to have only one 'forum' to
communicate. When things get bigger (thats if you want to) then more
specific forums may need to be formed, like Moodle forums:

I'd have thought a better option would be to either enable 'digest mode'
(one email per day or whatever, rather than 100) or to unsubscribe....
(I'm assuming this list is powered by mailman, and therefore does
digest mode... I've not looked)
