I have to agree with Julian here, I've not had any problems using any of the
Flash player 10 builds using Xerte, BBC website etc on either XP or Vista.
Thomas it sounds more like you had a corrupted install of flash player
rather than the version itself being a problem.

Let's just be really clear about this:
There is no need to reinstall the Flash Player.
The current Flash Player works fine with Xerte. I am running 10,0,22,87 and
it works fine.
Please, do not go uninstalling and reinstalling any Flash players.
There are bugs in toolkits as we are just finalising things, but I just
wanted to be really clear that there is no compatibility issue between Xerte
and the current Flash Player.
Try this link if you want to be sure:

This has worked well for me as far as the install goes and I now have a more
or less usable xampp version, however I have had/am having some problems and
I thought it might be helpful to mention them.
1) Adobe have issued an upgrade to their Flah Player which doesn't seem
to work with anything including the BBC, let-alone XERTE. If, like me you
took the upgrade trustingly you will need to de-install it using the Prgrams
and Features option in Control Panel and then re-install version 9.159 which
you can download from
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266
<http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=
2> &sliceId=2
Choose 'Flash Player 9' and unzip it somewhere safe and then run
flashplayer9r159_winax.exe within the fp9_archive/9r159 directory. This
seems to restore both Xerte and the BBC to normal working
2) I still get some errors when trying to edit a project as shown
below:
Warning:
copy(C:\\xampp\\htdocs\\toolkits\\USER-FILES/1-guest-Nottingham/data.xml)
[function.copy <http://localhost:8080/toolkits/function.copy> ]: failed to
open stream: No such file or directory in
C:\xampp\htdocs\toolkits\modules\xerte\edit.php on line 46
Warning: chmod() [function.chmod
<http://localhost:8080/toolkits/function.chmod> ]: No error in
C:\xampp\htdocs\toolkits\modules\xerte\edit.php on line 48
This meant I could not edit anything, so I copied across the USER-FILES
directory from an older install and renamed a directory to match and that
seems to have worked although there is nothing in it.
3) I don't seem to be able to import a previous project. I have tried
saving in both standard .zip format and scorm.zip format, but in both cases
it complains that the templates are not recognised - I get an error message
as follows:
"No valid template equivalent found on this site. Please contact your system
administrators".
Unless I'm doing something really silly, I guess his means that I'm going to
have to re-create all the work I've done under the old templates. I'ld love
to be told I've done something silly!
Anyway thanks to Patrick and Julian for giving me enough optimism to try to
upgrade - maybe it's asking too much to think that I can upgrade the older
projects - they were, after all, made in a 'beta' release.
Kindest Regards,
Thomas

Ignore the XAMPP button for now, should still install ok.
Your localhost settings are
host - localhost
username - root
password - leave this blank
database name - whatever you'd like
database prefix - leave this blank
on the next page
database user - root
database name - blank
After that it should work ok for me (i've installed it on 3 different local
host XAMPPS ok. Ignore the extra settings on the next page, just click ok.
My XAMPP is no longer standard (due to some other software), but once I've
sorted the "bug" I'll make a speed install for XAMPP.

Hi Costas
A few points...
1. I think the 000730.html list post you refer to is out of date now at
least in terms of page3.php which contains lots of form fields as you say
and these shouldn't be null. That instruction refers to a previous installer
so ignore that instruction to add nulls.
2. Although you've followed a link to download v0.91 beta what you've
actually downloaded is a preview release of v1.0 which contains a bug we are
trying to resolve but Pat is on leave until next week.
3. The install should work in terms of completing the 4 steps but as you say
the Xampp button is redundant and more importantly if once installed you try
to create anything you'll probably get an error. So I would hold fire until
next week and news on this list.
Cheers
RonM

Subject: [Xerte] Installing Toolkits
Hello,
I've started installing Xerte Online Toolkits (v0.91 beta) by following the
instructions at
http://lists.nottingham.ac.uk/pipermail/xerte/2008-September/000730.html
. However, so far my attempts to complete the installation have been
unsuccessful. I seek for some advice and guidance.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. Install XAMPP (Success!)
- Download xampp from
http://www.apachefriends.org/download.php?xampp-win32-1.6.7-installer.ex
e;
- Run the installer, choosing to install apache and mysql as services
- Open the xamp control panel and stop apache and mysql
- Goto c:\xampp\apache\conf\httpconf.conf file
- Remove the comment ('#') from the following line: #LoadModule
rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
- Restart apache and mysql in the xampp control panel
2. Install Xerte Toolkits (Success!)
- Download and install the Xerte Online Toolkits from
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/downloads/toolkits.zip
- Create a folder called 'toolkits' in c:\xampp\htdocs\
- Extract all the files from the zip to c:\xampp\htdocs\toolkits\
3. Setup Xerte Toolkits (Failed!)
- Navigate in your browser to http://localhost/toolkits/setup/ <-- Done!
- On the first page click 'next' <-- Which one, there are two Next buttons;
the "For XAMPP People" isn't is a dead link xampp.php. Followed the second
Next button pointing to config_setup.php
- On the second page click 'next'. These first two pages contain important
information for any sys admins setting up toolkits on a n production server.
<-- Done!
- On the third page, enter 'localhost' as the host, 'root' as the database
name, leave the password blank, enter 'toolkits' for the database name and
leave the prefix field blank <-- Done!
- On the next page enter 'root' for the database account and leave the
password blank <-- Done!
- On the next page, enter 'NULL' in each field <-- On this page
(page3.php) there are too many fields (surely can't expect to enter NULL to
every single text box)! When I clicked on Submit Query I got many warnings
and Install complete message (see attached file).
- On the next page, click 'next' <-- No such option available.
- On the following page, enter 'NULL' in each field <-- No such option
available.
- On the following page, enter 'NULL' in each field <-- No such option
available.
When I opened the Xerte toolkits page (http://localhost/toolkits/) I got the
following error messages:
Warning: mysql_select_db() [function.mysql-select-db]: Access denied for
user 'ODBC'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in
C:\xampp\htdocs\toolkits\config.php on line 36
Warning: mysql_select_db() [function.mysql-select-db]: A link to the server
could not be established in C:\xampp\htdocs\toolkits\config.php
on line 36
Any help is much appreaciated
Regards,
Costas Calcanis
