Julian, if that file does not exist in the standalone, does the editor use an internal default?
I can't find template.xml in the install folder.

You can customise the xml that makes the initial project file,
so that it always has an icon property pointing to an icon.
In a standalone temple the file is template.xml
On the server it is modules/xerte/Nottingham/data.xml

mind was to have the icon appear by default in every new project

property to the learning object icon, and load up the icon you want,

that an icon appears as a permanent feature in the top strip?
I think it has to be imported into
the Flash player by a script somehow?
