[Xerte-dev] Re: Problems with XAMPP install of develop code

Hi Ron
From what Tom has said unstable zip should lag develop by 1 day at most so unless its not picking up all the files we should be testing the same thing so that is strange that both Fay and Julian are seeing the same issues...

I'm using a Windows 7 laptop most of the time and on my main installation of
XAMPP which is the portable version on an external HDD rather than directly
installed (so I can use anywhere on any Windows machine - in theory) I have
various copies of Xerte installed e.g. 2.1, develop, editor (with updates
pulled direct from git using TortoiseGit) and an install from the community
site download.
However I had a separate reason to create a new xampp copy with latest
versions of Moodle and Mahara so tested the community site unstable download
with a full install on that which seemed to work ok. However I did notice an
issue with only seeing the top banner and part of a drop down top left but
after refreshing all was fine. I think I noticed that again anad again
refresh worked but this may have been browser cache because after restarting
the machine the next day all was fine.
By default I'm testing with IE10 and Chrome and only occasionally Firefox.
Creating a project has been fine throughout.
There are obviously lots of variables here e.g. what exactly are we testing
or trying to replicate:
platform?
xampp version, also portable or installed?
develop from git or unstable zip?
browser?
Full, /setup, or xampp install method?
There shouldn't be any need to change file paths - I certainly haven't had
to do that.

I am, I'm not sure about Julian (he's not around today).
I'll have a play around this afternoon to see if I can work out what's
happening. I have got it working for now by hardcoding some of the file
paths in edithtml.php but it's not ideal as I have to change them if I want
to switch between projects.

Are you both using latest xampp? Is it possible to uninstall xampp and try
an older version? Its possible that something in windows xampp is causing
this and changes haven't made it into Mac yet due to architecture
differences or because mac can sometimes be secondary to windows in terms of
development priority...

Hi Fay
From memory (although not what Tom has suggested but this process has always
seemed to work for me) here is what I did and edit and create worked for me.
Downloaded and installed xampp (mac)
Downloaded and installed Sourcetree (mac)
I had my mac reimaged after a crash so had to do these steps but you may
not or probably use different software...
Used Sourcetree to checkout xerte straight into the xampp htdocs folder into
a 'xerte' named folder Changed the permissions on the 5 required folders Run
xampp and started server and mysql Opened browser to localhost/xerte and got
load of errors Changed address to localhost/xerte/setup and it loaded fine
Tried full server setup and got errors Then went back to setup and ran xampp
setup and all went through fine
Went to localhost/xerte and workspace loaded Created and edited a lo, all
worked fine
Now, although not recommended practice, sourcetree allows me to switch
between branches of xerte flawlessly and if I make changes I can commit them
straight from there to github.
I'm off ill just now but from memory the only issues I got were errors on /
initially and on setup when trying to do a full install...

So, when you have all tried this and it works does that include trying to
create or edit a project? Because that's the point that it completely stops
working for me and Julian - it never gets past the loading screen.

Hi Tom
Yes thats the behaviour that I was getting. I tried the full server setup
(on xampp) first and it didnt work. I prefer that as I have more control
over the setup and I know Ron always uses it too. Got a load of errors and
then tried the xampp setup and that did work fine.

Hmmm...
What I did was:
1. install latest xampp
2. download unstable from community website 3. unzip that in the
xertetoolkits folder of xampp 4. Start localhost/xertetoolkits (it gives me
errors, I will look into that) 5. Start localhost/xertetoolkits/setup 6.
Choose xampp install
It seems to work fine.
Step 6 doesn't work in IE11, I'll lok into that as well.

Tom
