[Xerte-dev] Re: Discussion regarding Github/Scrum/Trac/etc

This is what I was saying about top level structure... the actual code should perhaps have been nested inside a src folder (rather than the root) and then we can have docs/ tests /build files etc outside of that and they don't get installed to everyone's machines...

I haven't added anything from the Xerte repo yet. Do you want all of it? Or just the source for the Flash bits still used in toolkits?

I'll set up the GItHub repo.

So the first step is get the Xot code on GitHub... and integrate with the Xerte tree and close down googlecode

So we can do it later. I think the key thing will be start making tickets for everything we do. Trac might do more than we need just now, but I reckon best to take the simplest solution and see if it works rather than add a load of stuff just because we can,

Ok.

Trac can be intergrated with GitHub, but I don't know about the other way around...

Tell you what then, let's see how we get on with github and the issue tracker there, and see what we think,

Julian wondered ( in the previous thread):

Do you think github does enough with tickets for us to manage a SCRUM like workflow?

Honestly, I don't know. I don't mind installing trac, just to be able to play with it, and github, and figure this out before we make a definite choice.

Yes, I think combining would be a good step since both wizards are intertwined... we also have a shedload of duplicate code...

I also would like us to combine the source trees of toolkits and xerte, and/or make xot leading....

Ehmm, and I'll wait a bit for installing trac then? It lloks like going to github and using as much as we can of github is the most sensible thing to do.

We should really start a new thread for this discussion...

That "Improve this doc" allows you to Fork->Change-> Submit Pull Request

Yes, public is fine for us. I'll set it up later, then we can hook Trac up to it. I've got a bit to learn about how the two will work together...

We are looking to standardise development processes here across a few developers groups that all do things differently, and I'd like our project to inform the choices we make: my idea, in nutshell, is git + Trac + SCRUM,

Public means that they are publicly accessible...

>From my understanding, anyone can Fork the repository and make their own local copy and make changes - they then submit a pull request and if we like it we can pull their changes back into the main repo... This is where we benefit from the community...

To git (i.e. local to trac on the community server)? or to github?

Difference, as far as I can tell, is that you can host public git

repositories for free, and private ones cost money. It's not entirely

clear to me what 'public' means. Publically accessible, like googlecode,

or that anyone can commit. I think that last 'feature' is undesirable,

and honestly I can't believe that's the case, but haven't had the time

to make sure what it is.

I'll start setting up trac.
