I don't see the point in committing into 1.8...
And also the fact that you can't test some functionality probably also
means you steered clear of those parts of the code.
And I do understand that you don;t like to merge the code in, it's not
fun, but most of the time, it goes a lot smoother than last time.
Just try it:
1. Checkout a clean trunk
2. merge your code over it. Anything that will conflict is clearly
indicated.
