I may have confused things here by referring to the Ivona voice - that's
simply the reason I was testing the TTS but this isn't a separate TTS
programme it's just additional voices I installed and tested using IE and
the built-in active x tts. The same thing happens on my machine with the
default Microsoft Sam voice so if you don't get the same think when viewing
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/toolkits/play_560 with tts on and clicking the
next or previous buttons then maybe it's just something local to my machine.
I'll test with Windows 7 on my mac at some point and report back.
Meanwhile would be good if others could comment e.g.
1. View http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/toolkits/play_560
2. Turn TTS on
3. Tab around to confirm TTS is working
4. What do you hear when you click next, previous and continue?

Can you try and mock this up in a simple flash movie with a single button in
it and see how we get around it? I don't have the screen reader software.
The only thing I can see is that we should also be setting
_accProps.description: we are just setting _accProps.name.

Here's what I get. Ivona voice sounds great but the NaN's are a bit odd...

So this is using 'normal' TTS. OK. I can't see what the issue is: in the
engine there is no code to speak in onRelease for the button, and the
accessibility properties are set a al the code below, which as far as I
recall, should cover it all:
this.nextBtn._x = x+w-30;
this.nextBtn._y = y+h-30;
this.nextBtn.onRelease = function() {
this._parent.nextPage();
};
this.nextBtn.tabIndex = getTabIndex();
var col = new Color(this.nextBtn);
col.setRGB(STYLES.statusTextColour);
this.nextBtn.onSetFocus = function() {
speak(engine.languageData.nextButton[0].description);
};
this.nextBtn._accProps = new Object();
this.nextBtn._accProps.name =
engine.languageData.nextButton[0].description;
Accessibility.updateProperties();

Yes - try it - with TTS on clicking either of those 3 buttons reads out what
sounds like NaN on my system.
Works the same way on your 560 example
I guess it could be an oddity with the Ivona voices I've installed but seems
unlikely.

Not to sound dumb, but you mean they are read out when you click them with
the mouse?
Do they work ok when you tab to them..?
I didn't think anything was supposed to speak when you clicked...

Hi Julian
most of this does seem to be fixed now which is great but I was at Techdis
yesterday and mentioned that I was impressed how much better it sounds with
a good voice installed and did a quick demo and noticed another small error
- when clicking previous, next, continue "NaN" get read out.
Also I can't remember for sure but didn't tabbing around also used to select
the page title? At the moment when the page loads the page title get's read
but it doesn't get selected when tabbing. Maybe it never did just can't
remember and it would be good if it did.

Engine from the svn. It had some dodgy references to the languages xml in
it.
