Thank you for your explanation, Libor. I will await his publication and use D. lenensis as a valid species until we know its status.

Where can I see the results of TaxoFly?

Best regards

Leif

Dear all,
I know only situation around D. lenensis. Dasysyrphus lenensis was synonymized with D. nigricornis by Anatolyi Barkalov in his paper:
Barkalov A.V. 2007 Hoverflies of the genus Dasysyrphus Enderlein, 1937 (Diptera, Syrphidae) from the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. Euroasian Entomological Journal 6: 273-298+ VIII
But I discussed this synonymy with him when prepared data for TaxoFly and we have to repair this synonymy to D. nigricornis and D. kegali. D. lenensis is surely separated species to D. nigricornis according to current opinion of Anatolyi, but not published yet. So I used D. lenensis in TaxoFly, even if I am not so sure if D. lenensis is conspecific with Centraleuropean populations named as D. lenensis.

With best wishes
Libor

Emne: Scientific names changed

Dear all

Does anybody know why scientific names of hoverflies have been changed lately in the Catalogue of Life? Examples are Melanostoma mellinum, now M. mellina, and Dasysyrphus lenensis, now a synonym for D. nigricornis.

Where were changes published?

Best wishes

Leif

Hi Leif,

I am not aware of a publication with such changes. Catalogue of Life

receives the taxonomic information from www.diptera.org

If you do a little search there, this is what I found for *D. lenensis*:

http://diptera.org/Nomenclator/Details/48073

Under Authority, they cite Barkalov and Mutin (2018). If you check that

publication, authors mention the following:

*Dasysyrphus nigricornis (Verrall, 1873)*

= *Dasysyrphus lenensis *Bagatshanova, 1980

Distribution. Sib, S Kh ? Eu, Mn.

Remarks. The records of this species from the Far East [Gritskevich, 1997,

1998] actually belong to a separate species that is not identical to *D.

lenensis* Bagatshanova, 1980.

The same for *M. mellinum*: http://diptera.org/Nomenclator/Details/44818

In this case it is an error. The species was originally described as Musca

mellina, and we do not know if mellina is a name or an adjective.

Stoma, stomatos is neuter in Greek, thus mellinum is correct if it refers

to an adjective. You can email Neal Evenhuis and Thomas Pape and ask them

if the correct spelling should be mellinum.

But Douglas Yanega knows better and can give you a better explanation.

Cheers,

Ximo
