Thank you, Mengual, for your reply.

I will contact some of the people mentioned.

Dasysyrphus lenensis was found for the first time this year in Denmark. If this species is the same as D. nigricornis, we have a problem. D. nigricornis was on the list of Danish species and then changed to D. pauxillus.

I also think M. mellina is an error. We have a discussion in Denmark as to whether a another new species of this year is M. mellarius or mellarium. I think the first is correct, as it is a noun and therefore does not depend the gender of Melanostoma.

Cheers

Leif

Hi Leif,

I am not aware of a publication with such changes. Catalogue of Life receives the taxonomic information from www.diptera.org

If you do a little search there, this is what I found for D. lenensis: http://diptera.org/Nomenclator/Details/48073

Under Authority, they cite Barkalov and Mutin (2018). If you check that publication, authors mention the following:

Dasysyrphus nigricornis (Verrall, 1873)
= Dasysyrphus lenensis Bagatshanova, 1980
Distribution. Sib, S Kh — Eu, Mn.
Remarks. The records of this species from the Far East [Gritskevich, 1997, 1998] actually belong to a separate species that is not identical to D. lenensis Bagatshanova, 1980.

The same for M. mellinum: http://diptera.org/Nomenclator/Details/44818

In this case it is an error. The species was originally described as Musca mellina, and we do not know if mellina is a name or an adjective.

Stoma, stomatos is neuter in Greek, thus mellinum is correct if it refers to an adjective. You can email Neal Evenhuis and Thomas Pape and ask them if the correct spelling should be mellinum.

But Douglas Yanega knows better and can give you a better explanation.

Cheers,

Ximo

Dear all

Does anybody know why scientific names of hoverflies have been changed lately in the Catalogue of Life? Examples are Melanostoma mellinum, now M. mellina, and Dasysyrphus lenensis, now a synonym for D. nigricornis.

Where were changes published?

Best wishes

Leif
