From suchith.anand at ethicaldatainitiative.org Fri May 2 15:16:14 2025 From: suchith.anand at ethicaldatainitiative.org (Suchith Anand) Date: Fri, 2 May 2025 15:16:14 +0100 Subject: [Responsible-digital-futures] Shaping the Future of Data Ethics: EDI Town Hall 2025 Message-ID: Dear colleagues, On the 31st of March 2025, EDI affiliates, data ethics experts from around the world, as well as some of the EDI?s key stakeholders gathered at the TUM Think Tank in Munich for the EDI Townhall. The summary from the EDI multi-stakeholder town hall meeting titled ?Shaping the Future of Data Ethics? is at https://ethicaldatainitiative.org/2025/05/02/shaping-the-future-of-data-ethics-edi-town-hall-2025/ During the EDI Townhall meeting in Munich on 31 March 2025, we remembered the contributions of Professor Fraser Taylor (1937-2025) https://gcrc.carleton.ca/index.html to the data ethics community. Prof. Taylor was a key contributor to the GEO Data Ethics SG and was one of the key initiators of the International Science Council CODATA Data Ethics WG and contributed immensely to our community. At the EDI Townhall 2025 meeting, an important and sentimental minute of silence was called for in grace of remembering the late and great Professor Fraser Taylor?s contributions to the Data Ethics community. This touching moment offered a reminder to remember those who came before, and the tireless dedication it takes to keep conversations of ethics at the forefront of policy and academic discussions. On behalf of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment-ERIP WG, I am pleased to inform you that CoARA-ERIP in collaboration with the European Commission, is organising a full day conference on "Advancing Responsible Research Assessment in the Digital Space" at the Royal Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB) on Monday 2 June 2025 from 9:00 am to 17:00 (CEST) in Brussels. The conference will bring together the full spectrum of European stakeholders involved in research assessment?spanning the European Commission, research funding organisations (RFOs), research performing organisations (RPOs), infrastructure providers and developers, policy experts, and representatives from CoARA, ENRIO, and affiliated initiatives?for an open dialogue on the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into science and research funding mechanisms. Read more about the event at https://coara.eu/news/coara-erip-conference-ra-digital-space/ The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is a collective of organisations committed to reforming the methods and processes by which research, researchers, and research organisations are evaluated. Current research assessment methods rely heavily on publication-based metrics such as citation counts, and often fail to recognise the wide array of contributions made by researchers. Over 700 research organisations, funders, assessment authorities, professional societies, and their associations have agreed on a common direction and guiding principles to implement reform in the assessment of research, researchers, and research organisations, outlined in the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment published in July 2022 which provides an outline for reform and implementation. Co-directed by philosopher and data scientist Sabina Leonelli, visionary artist Jacob van der Beugel, and filmmaker Oliver Page, this 20-minute cinematic journey transforms our understanding of data through the lens of nature; soils, stones, and plants. With stunning visuals and an innovative narrative, Data Shadows invites audiences to explore the unseen dimensions of data, turning abstract processes into tangible imagery and unravelling its lifecycle from extraction to transformation. As the film unveils data?s tangible roots, it raises crucial questions about its ethical and environmental implications. Each chapter?Extraction, Repository, and Journeys?immerses viewers in a thought-provoking exploration of data?s hidden realities. Prepare to be captivated and inspired, as this film challenges conventional perceptions and sparks meaningful conversations about our data-driven lives and the materiality of data. The film screening will be followed by a drinks reception and topical panel discussion, and the opportunity to put your questions to Jacob, the artist behind the concept; Aline Villavicencio, Director of the University of Exeter?s Institute of Data Science and AI; Sabina Leonelli, Research Director of the Ethical Data Initiative; and UK Head of Research, Stephan Guttinger.
