From suchith.anand at ethicaldatainitiative.org Thu Dec 4 19:52:30 2025 From: suchith.anand at ethicaldatainitiative.org (Suchith Anand) Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2025 20:52:30 +0100 Subject: [Responsible-digital-futures] High-Level EU Presidency Conference on Reforming Research Assessment Message-ID: Dear colleagues, The High-Level EU Presidency Conference on Reforming Research Assessment taking place in Copenhagen 3-4 December 2025 explores progress on reforming research assessment, making recommendations for further improvement, and identifying promising practices and international consensus. The conference brings together partners from academia, policy, funding, and R&I institutions to support progress on reforming research assessment. More than 300 participants are in Copenhagen to discuss how we ensure common ground in Europe and beyond to keep at the forefront of developing incentives and assessments that stimulate a thriving and responsible research culture. The official pre-conference report ?Emerging Practices in Research Assessment: Cross-Case Analysis of 10 International Funders? is now available at https://vbn.aau.dk/da/publications/emerging-practices-in-research-assessment-cross-case-analysis-of-/ The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) together with international partners hosted a co-creation workshop for funders with the theme "Implementing Responsible Research Assessment at Research Funding Institutions". This builds on DORA work with the practical guide for research performing organizations, which can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15000683. Details of the *High-Level EU Presidency Conference on Reforming Research Assessmen*t is at https://www.cerra.aau.dk It was my pleasure to represent the University of Exeter for this important event and share the announcement on *University of Exeter joining the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment* (CoARA) at the special event to mark CoARA's third anniversary hosted by CoARA, European University Association, Science Europe and the European Commission at The High-Level EU Presidency Conference. The University of Exeter press release is at https://news.exeter.ac.uk/research/university-deepens-its-commitments-to-responsible-research-assessment/ At the University of Exeter, we are committed to expanding UK-EU research collaborations. One excellent example of this is the Ethical Data Initiative (EDI) jointly coordinated by the University of Exeter and the Technical University of Munich. EDI is working with DORA, CoARA, European Commission, UKRI, REF 2029 Team, UK DSIT and key stakeholders in Reforming Research Assessment. Details at https://ethicaldatainitiative.org On 2 June 2025 , the Ethical Data Initiative, in collaboration with the European Commission, CoARA-ERIP, and European Network of Research Integrity Offices (ENRIO), organised an important conference on ?Advancing responsible research assessment systems in the digital space: A dialogue on ethics, integrity, and open infrastructures for research in the AI era? at the Palace of the Academies, Brussels where David Budtz Pedersen (Chair of the International Stakeholder Committee) announced the EU high-level conference on reforming research assessment. So it is really great that the University of Exeter formally joining CoARA is announced at the EU high-level conference on reforming research assessment. I also thank the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) of the UK Government, REF 2029 Team, Research Funders and other key HE stakeholders for responding to my *Open Letter on REF 2029 - Research Culture* Details at https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/geoforall/2025-September/006617.html Together, let's drive meaningful change towards a more inclusive and equitable representation in the UK academic landscape. Let us support the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, continuing to build communities where all voices are heard, and every individual thrives. ?*Be the change that you wish to see in the world.*? - Mahatma Gandhi Let?s build a world beyond racism and discrimination, where we all exercise our human rights. Be a human rights champion! Part of the Research Assessment for Ethics, Data and AI Discussion Series, this event, titled *"Open Science and Research Integrity for Research Assessment in the Digital Age"* will explore the critical intersection of Open Science (OS) practices and the imperative to uphold Research Integrity (RI) within evolving evaluation frameworks. The digital revolution has amplified calls for openness and transparency, making OS fundamental to reproducibility and trust. However, the same technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, introduce new integrity challenges, such as the risk of AI-driven data fabrication or the 'black box' opacity of complex algorithms. The panel will address the urgent need for Research Assessment (RA) reform to recognise and reward ethical and open scholarly contributions, moving beyond reliance on traditional metrics. Experts will discuss the role of global initiatives, such as the Coalition for the Advancement of Research Assessment (CoARA), and examine practical steps institutions can take to cultivate a research culture that actively promotes ethical conduct and ensures the reliability of scientific findings in a data-centric world. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation that aims to shape the future of research evaluation and governance on *Wednesday 17 December, 2025, from 11:00-12:30 UTC* Details at https://ethicaldatainitiative.org/2025/12/11/open-science-and-research-integrity-for-research-assessment-in-the-digital-age/ Best wishes Suchith Professor Suchith Anand Professor of Practice in Science Policy | Senior Adviser to Governments and International Organisations | Scientist | Global Citizen | Science Diplomacy | SDG Volunteer and Advocate https://spspa.exeter.ac.uk/people/profile/index.php?username=sa1131 https://ethicaldatainitiative.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
