During National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week 2023 several adult educators discussed with U. S. Senators the link between adult literacy and economic opportunity. Senator Susan Collins said that, ?Low levels of adult literacy pose significant economic challenges for our nation. Research shows that a mother?s education level is the greatest determinant of her children?s future academic success, outweighing other factors like family income.? *https://allinliteracy.org/all-in-and-engage-brief-u-s-senate-on-adult-literacys-link-to-economic-opportunity/* Getting Double Duty Dollars Between 1990 and 2023 when Senator Collins called attention to the important role of mother?s education in the academic success of her children, the idea of the intergenerational transfer of literacy from parents to their children as getting ?double duty dollars? was spread across several regions of the world. A sampling of the spread of this idea follows. *ASIA-PACIFIC REGION* *Saipan* Saipan Tribune (2003): ?Giving emphasis on adult education will result in ?large inter-generational payoff? and significant savings for the government, according to visiting international consultant Thomas Sticht. ?It's what I call 'double duty dollars' because every dollar you spend on adult education, say a mother, will double or more than double in value because she will certainly educate her children.? In a New Zealand Herald interview with Dr. Thomas Sticht, following his presentation at a New Zealand National Meeting of Workforce Literacy he said, ?As well as improving productivity in the workplace and boosting self-esteem, investing in adult literacy rubbed off on the children of workers, because their parents started reading to them at home.It is another use of our dollars - they become ?double-duty dollars," he said.? Through education of the adults, we might also improve the educability of their children.? However, a statement in the report has raised eye brows: ??the most effective and efficient ways to reduce the cost of low literacy, both in dollar and human costs, are to provide literacy materials and supports early in the lives of children.? This contrasts with what Thomas Sticht has called ?double duty dollars?, that is, funding adult literacy education improves the literacy levels of the adults and the educational outcomes of their children. So, coming out of the shelter again, with missiles over our heads aiming to kill us and our families, I am writing again, hoping for your clear support. Many friends worldwide wrote to me with much empathy, and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart. We need your support now!! I do not know what kind of information you hear. We are in the midst of a terrible war. Last Saturday morning, during a holiday, we heard sirens and ran to the shelter. A war started in the South. The things that they did in this war are unforgivable. We have 10 million people in Israel. We know now of at least 1300 civilians (including older people and children) who were slaughtered in their homes. The numbers are growing, and we have many wounded people. Over 150 were kidnapped, including babies, children, and older people. We have family and friends in the kibbutzim near Gaza. Luckily, they escaped and are fine. Yet, many of their children and friends were murdered within their homes or kidnapped. Their homes were ruined and burned. Our own children do not have shelters. So, they and our young grandchildren (14 people) are in our apartment because we have a shelter. Can you imagine missiles on Tel Aviv? Jerusalem? I am almost 65; I lived in many wars growing up in Israel. But this one is unbelievable. Yesterday, the Hizballah joined, and they shot missiles to the north of Israel. The atrocities committed by Hamas in the South have nothing to do with legitimate Palestinian national aspirations. Like many previous Middle East wars and campaigns, the world sympathizes with Israel until the tables turn with graphic pictures of death and destruction on the other side, particularly of innocents. My heart is with the poor two million people in Gaza, but continuing like this is impossible. I pray and do for peace! I am an active member of Women Wage Peace (a Palestinian-Israeli women's organization). Many, many people in Israel hold mild political views like the one that I have, favoring negotiation and peace and understanding the suffering of the Palestinian people. The Hamas doesn?t care for the people in Gaza. I know that Hamas spreads hate and tells lies. It is so vital that people worldwide will understand the situation and not be fed by lies!!! Please share the truth with friends. We have six young grandchildren. All of them had already lived through three wars. Can you imagine? Enough is enough. I hope that we are not going into an even bigger war. I know that BDS organizations spread lies. I call our friends in the world; please hear our call and help us!!! Please stay with us. Please help us free the hostages. They really help. Its good to know that we are not alone. Hamas is a terror organization, exactly like ISIS. It's not taking care of the Palestinians. Now, Hizballah joined from the north. We go in and out of the shelter, and I cannot stop thinking about the kidnapped people. We need the world's help. Please do whatever you can to help us. There is a talk about proportion and about the volume of the Israeli attack. What can we do? We are fighting a terror organization. I personally really hope that we will reach a situation of two states for two nations! Hamas and Hizballah are not helping the Palestinians get their country. They help the right wing in Israel show us that there is no one to negotiate with. I am sending you pictures of some of the kidnapped children. Please say something whenever you can; spread my words.
