I never knew Walter well, but I remember spending some time with him in the late 1970s that revealed him to be a delightful person. Pat and I were among those invited by the Center for the Study of Reading to present at a weekend conference at Wingspread in Wisconsin. After it ended, we shared a van with Walter and Roger Farr back to O'Hare--it took a couple of hours. Walter and Roger told lots of stories while Pat and I totally enjoyed them. One I still remember was Walter telling us about a time at a conference when someone had come up to him and said, "Gates, so nice to meet you!"

Sad that another of our group has died.
Although I never met Walter I felt I “ knew” him through the many things he wrote and published.

I never knew Walter personally, only his important work, but word travels among members of the environmental communities concerned about the San Juan Islands of Washington. Walter lived on San Juan Island and he and his wife, Ruth, hadgifted 13 acres of important land to the San Juan Preservation Trust, an organization that my wife and I, as boaters who enjoy the islands, contribute to. A tribute recently appeared in the SJPT newsletter: https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsjpt.org%2Fremembering-walter-macginitie%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7C9c160651d9184ca279bd08d8d386ab32%7Ce3fefdbef7e9401ba51a355e01b05a89%7C0%7C0%7C637491922642900294%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=OnPEXn2AnWXi6TUxDzAo2dMtG%2BZan%2ByF1MaE7h3Y7yo%3D&reserved=0

No child needs to be motivated to learn. To learn is their trade.
They can't stop learning because they can't stop growing.

Every time we teach a child something, we keep him/her from
inventing it. On the other hand, that which we allow him/her to
discover will remain visible for the rest of his/her life.
