Great story, Ray!  I am SO happy to know that she was a mentor to you.  She
no doubt recognized your fundamental commitment to rigorous scholarship
about pedagogy.  As for the dalliance with whole language, I would have
called what you did a commitment to student-centered pedagogy,  much of
which shared a common commitment to principles of whole language.
