Colleagues
Brian Cambourne and I have been involved in developing a think tank group we have called the Foundation for Learning and Literacy. Our focus is very much Australia and trying to respond as quickly as we can to political decisions we believe are not useful and indeed heading us in the wrong directions. We are in the process of finalising a website that will support teachers and parents in the teaching of literacy within a more holistic paradigm, rather than the constant ‘phonics’ only and ‘back to basics’ cry and current policies. Since March when Covid 19 impacted on us all, Australia had only really begun its 2020 school year. Schools went into lock down and teachers suddenly were forced to prepare all their literacy teaching via remote learning. They too were forced to work from home. Even when our schools reopened in the 4th week of Term 2 (18th May), schools were under very tight restrictions. This was particularly demanding on our elementary teachers who teach children from 5 – 12 years. We decided to develop a survey to provide these teachers a voice as to how these changes have impacted on the teaching of literacy and what resources they need now and in the future. While the audience is aimed predominately at Australian teachers, we designed the survey so that teachers in the international world could respond too. The survey has been approved by the University of Wollongong’s Ethics Committee and takes no more than 15 minutes. I am attaching the invitation and link to the survey and ask that you send it to as many teachers of elementary children that you know. The more responses we get the better. The survey will stay open for at least another month. I recognise your schools are on summer break, but hopefully there are many teachers who would like to share their experiences during these unique and stressful times. Many thanks,
Jan and Brian

Are you a primary school teacher who has been teaching literacy during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Have you been thinking about the ways you’ve been using digital technologies in your literacy teaching?
Please share your experiences in a brief anonymous survey.
We would love to hear from you!
Our project aims to provide a voice for primary school teachers during these unique times, by exploring the challenges teachers have and are experiencing during COVID-19 and in particular during the periods of remote and blended delivery of teaching and learning. The survey asks:
1) what has been supportive for your practice?
2) what are your needs moving forward in your teaching?
3) what potential professional learning opportunities you feel would be useful?
If you agree to participate, we ask you to complete this online survey via Qualtrics. It takes about 15 minutes. You are able to find more details of the project information on the front page of the survey.
The information you provide will help us understand your future needs and how you might be best supported in your literacy teaching.
