Dear All: I knew Jay from meetings of the National Reading Conference in
the late 1960s and early 1970s when it was the college and adult reading
meeting and we met yearly down in Florida. He always came to my
presentations on adult literacy research and we talked about work of his on
automaticity and other aspects of the reading process. Later he invited me
to do a chapter on teaching reading with adults for a book on reading
instruction that he co-edited with Alan Farstrup from the IRA. I always
liked Jay's sense of humor and his enthusiasm for reading and research. I
like Jay a lot and am saddened to learn of his passing from Covid 19. He
was really a great contributor to our understanding of the reading process
and just a very nice, good guy! RIP!
