Hello everyone…

It’s been wonderful reading your warm tributes to the three Hall of Fame members and literacy giants that we’ve lost within a month. Each was a mentor to me, whether or not they knew it…and I imagine the same is true for many of you.

  * My very first IRA conference was the year that Lee Indrisano was president…and I was incoming president of the CA Reading Association. I remember clearly walking through the receiving line of the IRA Board members at the annual reception, with the women on the Board in their long, lovely gowns. Dr. Indrisano was beautiful, elegant, and gracious----and I truly felt I was in the company of “royalty.” She welcomed me warmly and I can still picture her at the podium as she opened the first General Session.
  * I’ll never forget when Ken Goodman joined a session on whole language instructional techniques that I was presenting either at CRA or IRA, and I nearly collapsed when he walked into the room and took a seat in the back. Afterwards, he was complimentary and supportive…which to this newbie in academia felt so good. When I was president of IRA, Dr. Goodman was particularly happy about the 50th IRA celebration---and the large gathering of past presidents who came together for a special reception in their honor.
  * Dorothy Strickland was there for the IRA 50th birthday in San Antonio, as well. Ever gracious and kind, she mentioned she had so enjoyed the large display of IRA’s history with many historical teaching artifacts and children’s books. I served with Dr. Strickland on a couple of committees, and as people have suggested, her leadership style was inclusive, down-to-business, and highly effective.

I’m certain we all have memories of these three literacy leaders who influenced so many educators! Yetta, I’d be honored to work with you on organizing a more formal tribute to them. Take care and stay well, everyone!

The editor of the electronic magazine asked for some comments about Dorothy. Sharing them with fellow HOF members in advance. Told her she could use as few or as many as she liked.

Throughout my career, I was blessed to have the privilege of working with Dorothy Strickland in many professional settings. More often than not, they were national or international committees, task forces, and panels. Most were within IRA/ILA but also in NCTE and government agencies and foundations.

Dorothy was the ultimate professional. On these various panels, the charge was to find ways to improve the experiences and opportunities of students and teachers. Dorothy knew student learning was tightly linked to teacher learning. So she focused her energy on improving the quality of teacher education—by providing more rigorous and more empowering teacher learning in both pre-service credential programs and professional development settings.

Dorothy was a doer. She came to the table to get the work done. She didn't walk away when things didn't always go exactly the way she wanted them to. I am sure that her determination to finish the work, along with her collaborative disposition and her wisdom about policy and practice, were the reasons she was in such high demand as a member of these national panels.

Dorothy was a teacher and mentor--for so many doctoral students at Rutgers and for so many new scholars and teacher educators from all over the world. They all sought to emulate her model of being a literacy professional.

Dorothy was a friend. She was the kind of colleague you knew you could call on when you were confronted with a serious or delicate matter. One of my highlights: We were inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame in the same "class" in 1990, and shared the podium with our "inaugural" addresses.

Dorothy was a class act--That's how I will remember her.

My dear friends,

It is with a very heavy heart that I write to say that our colleague, Lee Indrisano, has passed away. Many of you knew Lee as a remarkable scholar, a trusted and loyal friend, and a model of grace, elegance, and thoughtfulness. Lee was a teaching exemplar, bringing all that she knew about research in teaching and learning to its practice, whether in an advanced graduate seminar or a tutorial with a first grader. Her relentless pursuit of excellence extended well beyond teaching and learning to all of her professional endeavors—we saw it when she hosted a conference for thousands of participants, a meeting for 20, or a dinner party for 12. We even saw and heard her commitment to excellence in her personal style, in her attention to every detail of her appearance, in the words she spoke, and in the manner in which she spoke them. For me, she was all of this and, in addition, a truly incredible mentor and the most loving, generous, and loyal friend anyone could hope to have. I will miss her deeply, but I am comforted by the knowledge that she lives on in the work of so many others who were so lucky to have been touched by her.

While Lee did not want us to formally recognize her passing, her niece and nephews have spent these last days thinking about all of the things that Lee loved doing in her healthier years. One thing that stood out for them was Lee’s love of giving books, especially children’s books, to them, to their children and to the many, many children she reached through her professional work. Lee’s niece, Alison (Indrisano) Wagner, is a volunteer with an organization in Tampa called Kay’s Ministry. Kay’s serves the homeless and very needy in the city of Tampa and in a migrant community called Wimauma. In honor of Lee, Alison plans to purchase backpacks and children’s books for each of the Wimauma children. The children love to read – books in English and Spanish are always scooped up when they are donated. The libraries are currently closed which has greatly impacted the children.
If you would like to assist Alison in this campaign, you can send your favorite children’s book or a donation (check made out to Kay’s Ministry) to Alison. Her address is Alison Wagner, 509 Manns Harbor Drive, Apollo Beach Florida 33572<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fmaps%2Fsearch%2F509%2BManns%2BHarbor%2BDrive%2C%2BApollo%2BBeach%2BFlorida%2B33572%3Fentry%3Dgmail%26source%3Dg&data=02%7C01%7C%7C63e820e9fd554f54b10708d7e6ff14c2%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637231855560729929&sdata=B8OLa7MkLNXD0EeXbqI4VPKbBjN2AmgfVRcXYTRKbEM%3D&reserved=0>.
