The editor of the electronic magazine asked for some comments about
Dorothy. Sharing them with fellow HOF members in advance. Told her she
could use as few or as many as she liked.
Throughout my career, I was blessed to have the privilege of working with
Dorothy Strickland in many professional settings. More often than not,
they were national or international committees, task forces, and panels.
Most were within IRA/ILA but also in NCTE and government agencies and
foundations.
Dorothy was the ultimate professional. On these various panels, the charge
was to find ways to improve the experiences and opportunities of students
and teachers. Dorothy knew student learning was tightly linked to teacher
learning. So she focused her energy on improving the quality of teacher
education—by providing more rigorous and more empowering teacher learning
in both pre-service credential programs and professional development
settings.
Dorothy was a doer. She came to the table to get the work done. She
didn't walk away when things didn't always go exactly the way she wanted
them to. I am sure that her determination to finish the work, along with
her collaborative disposition and her wisdom about policy and practice,
were the reasons she was in such high demand as a member of these national
panels.
Dorothy was a teacher and mentor--for so many doctoral students at Rutgers
and for so many new scholars and teacher educators from all over the world.
They all sought to emulate her model of being a literacy professional.
Dorothy was a friend. She was the kind of colleague you knew you could
call on when you were confronted with a serious or delicate matter. One of
my highlights: We were inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame in the same
"class" in 1990, and shared the podium with our "inaugural" addresses.
Dorothy was a class act--That's how I will remember her.
