Thanks for sharing this sad news, Jeannie!
A few memories of Lee---

I met Lee very soon after entering the profession in 1969, perhaps even
when I was still a grad student at Minnesota. Since Lee shared Donald
Durrell as a BU mentor with my Minnesota adviser, John Manning, it was
natural for me to be introduced to all the Durrell progeny, Lee among them.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, I met with her on an almost monthly basis in
Concord MA when we were both authors on the Ginn Reading Program (along
with Dale Johnson, Dick Venezky, Ted Clymer, among others). She was always
generous to me, especially in those early days of my career when confidence
was hard to come by. In the mid-late 80s, I served on the IRA Board during
some of the time when she was in the IRA presidential succession. It was
in that setting that I saw her gentle but firm hand of leadership.

The one word that comes to life for me when I think of Lee, at every stage
of her long career and rich life, is class. She did everything with such
grace and class--planning a meeting, organizing a dinner, giving a talk,
introducing a colleague. It was sheer class from start to finish. I will
miss her.
