RHF Colleagues,
Lakoff would argue we’re being “ outframed”— trying to rebut our theoretical adversaries’ arguments from within their frame. According to Lakoff this has the effect of reinforcing their frame in readers’ brains— the example he gives is that Nixon’s constant claim “ I am not a crook” served only to reinforce the idea that he was one.
I think any attempt at a response should first of all reframe our arguments and force Steve and his mob to argue from within our frame, not theirs.
If we can’t do this then perhaps no response , or a response along the lines of “ We’re sorry that you misunderstand our position and urge you to read it carefully until you do" would deprive them of the oxygen they’re hoping to get from our attempts to argue from within their frame.

Subject: Claims about dyslexia in the DSM
To: P. David Pearson <ppearson at berkeley.edu<mailto:ppearson at berkeley.edu>>
Professor Pearson,
You recently signed onto a letter that made false claims about the status of dyslexia in the DSM. I assume you were unaware they were false when you signed the letter. Now that you know, are you considering a full or partial retraction of your support?
Steve Dykstra
