The ABC’S of Investing in Adult Literacy Education in Prose, Tweets, and
Pictures

Tom Sticht, International Consultant in Adult Education (Ret.)

In 2005 I wrote an article entitled “ABC’S of Investing in Adult Literacy
Education”. In this article, for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, I
wrote a small note. For instance, for the letter “A” I wrote “A- An
investment in adult literacy education usually produces "double duty
dollars," meaning a dollar spent for adult literacy education usually
produces many dollars of returns on investment in improved productivity at
work, at home, in the schools and in the community.” For the letter Z I
wrote “Z - Zest and Zeal for life, greater health, wealth, social
inclusion, social justice, family devotion, greater concern for and caring
for the diversity of humanity and a greater chance for success in the
pursuit of happiness. All these are the realities as well as the
intangibles resulting from adult literacy education.”

Over the years the piece has been reproduced by several groups, including:

A decade later, in 2015, at the request of Sharon Bonney, Executive
Director of the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE), I reduced each
of the 26 alphabet notes to tweet size and COABE posted the tweets saying:
“The ABC’S of Investing in Adult Education –In 140 characters or less!”
COABE tweeted one letter per day during September 1-26 (Adult Education and
Family Literacy Week) to help raise awareness of adult literacy education.

Three years later, in 2018, Branka Marceta of the Capital Adult Education
Regional Consortium (CAERC), Greater Sacramento Region, took the original
ABC’S of Investing in Adult Literacy Education notes for each letter of the
alphabet and embedded them in beautiful illustrations and tweeted one a
week starting with the letter A on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 and ending
with the letter Z on April 30, 2019.

If you would like copies of the original piece, the COABE 140 or less
character tweets, and the original CAERC illustrated tweets without having
to search different places, I have included them together in a single
source report entitled, “ABC’s of Investing in Adult Literacy Education in
Prose, Tweets, and Pictures” available for free downloading online at:
