Hi All Again,
I am presenting below the bio of one nominee for the Reading Hall of Fame (deceased members). Cora Wilson Stewart’s bio is presented below.
We just need a yes or no vote on Ms. Stewart.
Many thanks,
Jan
Cora Wilson Stewart (January 17, 1875-December 2, 1958) started the Moonlight Schools of Kentucky for adult illiterates, developed a newspaper for adult literacy students, a reading series for rural illiterate adults, a Soldier's First Book for World War I, and a Mother's First Book. Stewart stimulated formation of President Hoover’s National Advisory Committee on Illiteracy, initiated a National Illiteracy Crusade, five times chaired the Illiteracy Section of the International World Conference of Education Associations, spoke for adult literacy education at the national Democratic party convention in 1920, spoke across the United States, reached hundreds of thousands of listeners through radio broadcasts, and inspired numerous other states to initiate campaigns to combat adult illiteracy. Her technique for teaching writing was used to teach over 700,000 African Americans to write their names to vote, thus stimulating the civil rights movement and eventually transforming the political and social landscape of the entire nation.
