David,

Many thanks for your vote of confidence (and that of others). I have to admit that I am more than a bit nervous about this event given the tension around this issue and the implications for students who struggle. I so want to get this as right as I can!

The podcast should be publicly available once it is edited.

I’ll let folks know how to access it.

I have received much-appreciated, helpful, feedback from several people who received my earlier email – and have revised my notes accordingly.

I am very open to additional input -

Thanks to you David, and to all,
Donna

I looked over your notes, Donna! I'd say, you are ready to convey a well-articulated, research-grounded, approach that keeps students' needs and interests at the center.

I'll try to tune in. Any info about how to tune into the podcast?

Best,

David

Subject: dyslexia podcast

Hi All,

Via Vicky Risko, I was asked to participate in a podcast with Nathaniel Hansford – which I agreed to – after a bit of back and forth and with Peter J and my department chair supporting thinking… Thanks, Peter and Ginny.

The podcast is scheduled for tomorrow (July 1) at 10:00 AM Eastern. I spent about an hour on the phone with Nate last week and he seemed like a very reasonable person who is genuinely interested in sharing information on the dyslexia debate. Nate asked that I not go into the podcast with a script – but to get my thoughts into at least somewhat of an articulate state – I created somewhat of a script in response to the questions that he provided in preparation for the podcast. As this is intended to be a conversation, who knows how things will actually go.

I have attached my current draft. If any of you happen to have time to take a look at this before the scheduled interview – I would welcome your thoughts. Wish I felt ready to share this earlier …. But I keep adding, and adding, rewording and rewording, rethinking….

Kathie, good luck on your interview… maybe some of this will contribute to your talking points.

Donna

Subject: Re: This is THE list - UPDATED!!

Thanks George. Just to clarify. I appreciate being included in your group’s emails and would be happy to continue receiving them. It’s more the other way around. The Hall of Fame is a much larger group with diverse efforts spinning off in different directions, although Vicki Risko, Jeanne Paratore and I have become the unofficial coordinators of efforts to address dyslexia issues.

There are many postings on the HofF listserv and even those related specifically to the dyslexia issue might more efficiently be summarized. There are also efforts that are not represented, or fully represented, on the listserv, which may be the case for your group as well. So, in the interest of coordination and good communication, Jeanne, Vicki, and I thought it would be useful for one of us (me) and one of you to be responsible for being more directly aware of what’s happening on our respective ends and ensuring coordination where it would be beneficial.

George and I have collaborated on other projects and our work together goes back to his grad school days, and his position puts him into direct contact with those with whom both of our groups hope to influence, which is why I reached out to him. Donna Scanlon will also be a good resource for bridging both groups’ efforts. But, I would be happy to work with any of you, and don’t hesitate to contact me directly. I’m sure Vicki and Jeanne feel the same.

Let’s hope that together our mutual efforts can help offset the mis-information being disseminated about dyslexia and the ill-advised legislation being proposed that narrows conceptions about learning to read and how it is taught.

Best,
David

Hi, folks. Earlier today I received an email from David Reinking suggesting ongoing communication and coordination between RHF and our group. (He has returned from Italy.) He asked if I would be willing to act as liaison between the two groups. I said I would, but that I would check with all of you to make sure it would be alright. Any objections? I assume the intention is that rather than include David and the others in all of our emails on each and every lead we are pursuing, we would instead just update them as our efforts take more certain form (publications, conference presentations, legislative efforts, etc.). In turn they would keep us up to speed with what they’re doing. The two groups could rely on each other as well as might seem fruitful. Does this sound reasonable? Let me know your thoughts.

Hello Everyone!

I was just reading the “Dyslexia Advantage” newsletter (I read the highlights to keep an idea of what’s going on with them).

The following request to participate in a survey is included. I’ve attached the survey.

Can you help Simon & Schuster author Micki Boas? She needs a few more stories of parents who struggled with their dyslexic children in school. She especially interested in stories from the West Coast and Dads. If you'd like to share your story, click HERE<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdyslexicadvantage.us11.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3Dbae7f263dc05f393c8376b353%26id%3D2b0daf4a18%26e%3D1ed01e1566&data=02%7C01%7Cgeorge.hruby%40uky.edu%7C62275bc7ae9c4c84926608d6f34aa323%7C2b30530b69b64457b818481cb53d42ae%7C0%7C1%7C636963899717478742&sdata=L73Lniz6Pw04GOzbhaObhVM64cWPSgu3kiSdEBel0Nc%3D&reserved=0> and you could be in her next book!

Thought you might find it interesting/helpful to see that this book is going to be published in the not too distant future…
