Dear colleagues
What desperately sad news.
Bill was known, and universally admired, in Europe, for his work internationally, and for his important scholarship on Emergent Literacy that guided and inspired so many of us.
But no one who met him failed to be drawn to his engaging manner, and his warm, wise, intelligent and open interest in the work and lives of others.
As Bernadette Dwyer, of Dublin City University currently VP of ILA, and past president of the Reading Association of Ireland put it, 'He personified professionalism, exemplifying the qualities of a great leader-—decisive, insightful, calm, and fair minded.’
No one did more to build bridges- between government and educators, between organisations, and between people. Those exceptional skills are rarely found, and are irreplaceable.
His many colleagues, friends and admirers in Europe send their condolences to all those who suffer from this loss, but especially to Junko, Alyssa and Jeremy.
Colin Harrison
