Sounds a good plan Victoria. Let’s proceed as we usually do for this round with the prospect of an on line discussion for changing or modifying procedures for 2018.

Interesting and important discussion and these are my observations/suggestions.

1. Since I have monitored the elections for several years, the policy as described has been faithfully implemented, each round and every year, we followed the procedures that I described.
2. The issues raised by Rob and Jan should be addressed by our group... but I have two requests:
a. Let's hold off on this discussion until after October 27 and the completion of this round of voting. It would be inappropriate to change the process at this point, and I don't think anyone is suggesting that.
b. Ray should initiate the discussion and call for different perspectives on the policy we have in place. I am sure Ray will have suggestions for us to enter into this discussion.

Hope this works for everyone. Vicki

Those are the questions I had, Bill. Which is why I asked the questions and proposed the examples I did.

My preference would be to be very specific about how we cast our votes in order to ensure that the policy is faithfully implemented.

I think the implicit rule is something like this: we can vote for up to three in the US category and up to 2 in the non US category. This principle holds for both the preliminary and final round of voting.

Of course that does not address the dilemma raised by the emails of both Rob and Jan. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I like Jan’s idea of an email discussion to get all the voices in the conversation.

My recollection of the discussion we had, was that RHF needed to become more international. I remember pointing out that I knew people in Australia, NZ and UK who might be worthy of being inducted. But these people may not be known widely in US so therefore not nominated. That’s why we decided on ‘two international’. Once there are more international members, then there is a stronger base for identifying people in other parts of the world. Therefore it may be time to revisit the nominating process and not have a specific number of international nominations.

As I’m not likely to attend any more meetings, I would like us to have such a discussion via email.
Cheers

Hi
I suspect our approach is intended to internationalise the RHOF, but it also appears to position us as a US membership with some international member slots.

Subject: [Reading-hall-of-fame] Election of New Members to RHF: Second Ballot

Hi everyone!

Thank you to all who voted in our first round of voting on potential new members to the RHF. We are now entering our second round of voting. 10 potential new members outdistanced their peers in the first round and are now listed on the attached ballot (Ballot B). Additionally, I am sending you the bios of these ten individuals.

1. Please vote for five candidates following our guidelines -

We will elect five living (new) members who are eligible for membership, two of whom will be non-U.S. nationals with permanent residence outside of the United States. Non-U. S. nationals nominated are designated with ** on the ballot and the list of bios.

2. Please send me your votes by the end of the day, Friday, October 27. Please do not send your votes to the list serve but email me directly atvictoria.j.risko at vanderbilt.edu<mailto:victoria.j.risko at vanderbilt.edu>.

You can email me a list of your five choices or mark the ballot and return it to me.

3. Once we have a count of the votes, Ray Reutzel, RHF President will announce the names of our elected new members.
Thank you for your support of this process. I look forward to hearing from you!

Vicki
