Hi all
I have already aired my views on ILA. And like many others I am retired from the our School of Education, although employed part-time in the Faculty of Business at University of  Wollongong. I have been attending IRA (ILA) for many years on my own money and thus make careful choices when and what I come to. While I accept Peter’s views of trying to link research and teaching, it has been my experience that practising teachers rarely went to sessions at IRA (ILA) that were research based. One needed to make sure there was a strong practice component to the session to attract teachers. LRA, in my view, is more supportive for those teachers who are wanting, or who have begun postdoctoral studies. I think our work is far better suited for these early career academics. I really enjoyed Nashville where I met several young academics and doctoral students who wanted to hear about our research and where I felt that I could assist as a mentor, and indeed have continued some conversations via email after the conference. I found it very refreshing also not to be swamped with publishing companies swanning around!!

Having said all this, I doubt I will travel to the US for another conference and if I did it would be LRA. As Colin points out travelling to US in peak tourist season is very expensive for international people. And the changing landscape of ILA is not for me. Ken summed it when he said it is like a trade fair.

I do strongly support the idea of Zoom as I would still love to ‘see’ my fellow colleagues. If necessary I dont mind paying for using it. It would be a lot cheaper for me than travelling to US.

So my vote is for RHF to begin the negotiations to move to LRA and utilise the technology in order for those of us who can only be there virtually (and for me in the middle of my night!) If I would be happy to assist in this process if needed.

I know we have a day of research (the new version of the pre-cons), research awards, and a Literacy Research Panel, but despite efforts by the Board and those responsible for the convention, the truth of the matter is that research sessions just do not attract the numbers that they once did.

Why?  I am not sure.  Perhaps our research traditions no longer yield policy- and practice-relevant data or stories.  Perhaps teacher education isn't nurturing a research- or inquiry-based disposition; or perhaps teachers hear the story but don't buy it.

I just find the ILA program very limited.  Hence my vote for connecting the RHF to LRA rather than ILA.  And I think that Colin's analysis of what will be needed if we do switch is right on target.  And I second Colin's point about international as well.

My two cents worth.  I'll chime in again just before the meeting at ILA.

I share Peter’s view that ILA is the most important location in the world reading calendar for bringing together teachers and researchers, but one key consequence of its move to early May to July is that the cost of air fares to the USA from my country has doubled, and that’s not good.

So for a scholar who now attends only  one reading conference in the US per year, it has to be LRA for me, and I have the feeling that more RHoF members attend that conference than go to ILA.

So I would encourage RHoF members to press ahead with, in order of priority (a) seeking agreement from the membership for the change of allegiance fro LIA to LRA  (b) it that’s agreed, seeking agreement from the membership on the best time close to or within the conference to meet, and (c) if that’s agreed, aiming to submit proposals that are strong enough to gain at least one symposium slot.

Those who attend LRA are aware that that association is seeking to build up its already very active international profile, and in my view this is another factor in favour of our seriously considering a switch of allegiance.

However, I am aware that there would be losses as well as gains if we made the switch, and I look forward to hearing the views and arguments of other colleagues.

Hello Rita and colleagues

I won't be able to attend these breakfasts for the foreseeable future, as retirement takes its natural course and my consultancy accounts dry up; so, formally at least, I don't have a view on the issue of the location of the RHoF gatherings.

Having said that, I'd add that an important prior question might relate to the perceived function of 'The Hall' - I see one of its primary roles as reinforcing the connection between classroom practitioners and reading researchers - a visible bridge between these groups. In that light, and independently of any of the administrative aspects of moving versus staying, I'd be predisposed to stay with ILA, even if that means some stern negotiations with its executive.

Of the 51 members voting, 62% indicated an interest in moving from ILA to LRA  (reasons included time of year, expense, research focus of LRA).   Ray Reutzel, Vice-President, RHF,  and I then sought information from LRA to get some idea of what it might mean for us if we made the move and wanted to schedule both our annual induction meeting and a session at which our recent inductees might make presentations. We identified the following as issues that would need to be resolved

  *    All presentations for the LRA conference must be vetted--according to LRA Board policy Changing this policy would require LRA Board action; we would need to submit a proposal for our presentation session  (We are guaranteed a slot at ILA for the presentation session of recent inductees).

  *   Our annual induction meeting would need to be scheduled when it did not conflict with meeting times --so a 7:30 a.m. breakfast might not be feasible -- we might have to consider other options (e.g., evening meeting on Tuesday before the conference begins)

  *   We would need to work with LRA in terms of arranging for our annual induction meeting (food services, etc.).  To this date, ILA has worked closely with the RHF treasurer. They handled the arrangements, the menu, etc.

All of these issues can be addressed, of course -- but before we make a decision, the RHF Executive Board is recommending the following:

REC 1. Provide opportunities for conversation about this possible move on the RHF listserv.  We encourage you to make your views known, especially as related to the issues identified above.  It would also be helpful if you would think about some possible solutions to these issues (e.g.,  If we can't get a guaranteed slot for our presentations by recent inductees, do we eliminate that - and just have our annual meeting/induction meeting?  Should we identify a RHF member to handle the induction meeting arrangements, work with the hotel to arrange for breakfast, etc., Make a formal proposal to LRA Board with our request - and then make a decision based on their response)

REC 2. Hold in-depth discussion of the possible move from ILA to LRA at our annual meeting in July, 2017.  There we can summarize the results of the listserv discussion, discuss pros and cons, and have a vote on this issue (if recommended, we can also hold the vote electronically, once a motion has been made at the annual meeting).  If there is a decision to move the annual meeting/presentations to LRA, we would also need to develop a timeline for the move.
