Dear Reading Hall of Fame Members: Below is an update about the potential move of Reading Hall of Fame meetings (breakfast and presentations) from ILA to Literacy Research Association.
The Executive Committee of Reading Hall of Fame (RHF) formed a committee to investigate the potential move of Reading Hall of Fame from ILA to LRA. Committee members are: Colin Harrison, Gay Ivey, Don Leu, David Pearson, Bill Teale, Rita Bean (chair), and Ray Reutzel (ex-officio). The committee met electronically for the first time on June 5, 2017. Gay Ivey, President-Elect of LRA, provided in-depth information about LRA policies and practices. She also described the very positive response of the LRA board to the possibility of RHF holding its official annual meetings at their conference. Gay also mentioned that the move of RHF to LRA could be a win-win situation, given LRA’s interest in research, international members, and mentoring as a part of their strategic plan. The hour-long discussion resulted in the following:
1. Reading Hall of Fame committee supports moving the RHF annual meeting and presentation program from ILA to RHF (see contingency below, #5).
2. Gay Ivey mentioned that LRA is repurposing its Saturday programming and the possibility of RHF holding its meetings at that time would be feasible. Committee is recommending that RHF hold its annual breakfast meeting and program (at which new inductees make presentations) on Saturday (breakfast meeting at 7:00 a.m. followed by the presentation program at 8:30 a.m.)
3. Members of the committee recognize the importance of codifying such an arrangement (given changes in officers, policies of an organization). Gay, as President-Elect of LRA, has agreed to draft a proposal that RHF hold its annual meeting at LRA. She recommended that an LRA board member present this proposal to its board for approval. RHF committee members will work with Gay on the development of such a proposal for consideration by the LRA Board in December, 2017.
4. If the LRA Board passes the proposal with a simple majority, this committee will send a Qualtrics Survey to RHF membership in late December 2017, asking for a vote on proposed move. If RHF membership is in agreement with the proposed move, the 2018 RHF meeting will be held at LRA.
5. If there are any difficulties with the proposal, Bill Teale , President of ILA, believes that RHF can work with ILA to hold its meeting at ILA in July 2018 until any potential issues with the proposed move are resolved.
We would like RHF members to have an opportunity to discuss these recommendations at the annual breakfast meeting on July 16, 2017, in Orlando FL. However, given that many members are not attending that meeting, we encourage RHF members to use the listserv if they have questions or comments about any of the recommendations of this committee. Further, the committee will continue to keep membership apprised of its work.
The committee also discussed the desire to maintain its relationship with ILA and acknowledged the support that ILA has provided during the past years. Bill Teale indicated that RHF might want to hold a session at ILA each year – in addition to the official one at LRA. He felt that ILA would be receptive to such a session. Proposals for such presentations would, of course, be submitted through the regular review process.
The next step for the committee is to work with Gay Ivey to draft a proposal for presentation to the LRA Board. The Executive Committee of RHF also needs to review the current timelines for nominating new members as a move to LRA might require moving these dates.
I hope to see many of you in July in Orlando.
Best , Rita Bean
President, RHF
