Hi there, esteemed colleagues,
THE ONE-LINE MESSAGE:
To post a message to everyone on the Reading Hall of Fame list serve, please put the following address in the 'To:' line
reading-hall-of-fame at lists.nottingham.ac.uk
FOR EMERITUS PROFESSORS, AND OTHERS WITH ENDLESS FREE TIME - MY REASON FOR SENDING THIS MESSAGE:
Are you sitting comfortably? If not, please sit down with a coffee....
Some folks have not been posting to the correct address (the blue one, above), and this is understandable, because when a message gets successfully posted, it appears with the potentially confusing information on the top line "... sent by reading-hall-of-fame-bounces at lists.nottingham.ac.uk". You might deduce therefore that this is the address to post to. WRONG!!
This cunning change to the address is part of what our clever little system does to deal with 'bounces', i.e. messages that don't get delivered. Mail from our list is sent identifying the sender as 'listname-bounces' because, if a message is undeliverable, it is returned to that address, where it is automatically processed by a script which tries to detect the reason for the 'bounce'. After a certain consecutive number of bounces for a recipient, the script is able to automatically suspend them from receiving further mail from the list (if, for example, their mail account has been deleted, their mailbox is permanently over its quota and cannot receive any more messages, etc.), and then the system does not spend hours trying to resend to <JRRTolkein at bagend.org> or whatever address you had before it changed and you didn't tell me.
With warm regards,
Your list serve managing pal,
Colin
