This is an important effort! The task of supporting the SIG on literacy efforts is an important one and I urge you support and involvement. If possible please take part in the meeting set for the ILA convention in St. Louis. Thank you.

To that end, most of you have been members of the ILA SIG, Literacy Issues in Developing Countries, which has been expertly led by Carol DeShano da Silva for a number of years. As you may remember, Carol had decided it was time to pass the baton and reached out to the SIG members to see who might be willing to take things on.

Stepping up to the plate in this regard are Wendy Saul of University of Missouri, Charles Temple of Hobart and William Smith Colleges , Alan Crawford, Professor Emeritus California State University and myself, Scott Walter from the literacy NGO, CODE. And with this message we are asking you to join us and to actively support the Literacy Issues in Developing Countries SIG.

ILA has given us a time slot at the convention--Sunday, July 19th, from 4-5 pm. It will be a great opportunity to get together with like-minded professionals from around the world to exchange notes and talk about , well, Literacy Issues in Developing Countries. We also hope to get a listserve going to share information on an ongoing basis.
