Hi everyone, I just saw the following information and want to share it with you. The Teachers College Record Journal is remembering Bob Calfee, as follows:
In Memory of Robert C. Calfee
by TCRecord<http://www.tcrecord.org/AuthorDisplay.asp?aid=17884> October 27, 2014
A remembrance of our former co-editor.
The editors of the Teachers College Record would like to honor the memory of our former co-editor and author, Robert C. Calfee, who passed away on Friday, October 24. We are highlighting Calfee's most recently accepted article, scheduled to appear in the print Volume 116, No. 11 of this year, 2014. The paper was co-authored by Kathleen Wilson, Brian Flannery, and Barbara Kapinus; it presents a model of formative assessment to accompany and support practitioner implementation of the Common Core Literacy Standards for college and career-readiness. Bob Calfee worked tirelessly to improve the quality of education in school contexts throughout his long and productive career. He will be remembered particularly for his contributions to the reading assessment and literacy communities and dearly missed as well by his peers in educational psychology.

So many great tributes you are sharing. You should share them with Suzanne Barchers on the caring bridge site she established for Bob.

You should also know that I have heard from at least 4 Stanford PhD grads, none of whom were Bob’s advisees, with heartwarming stories of the mentoring they received from Bob during their Stanford years.

Bob was one of the gentle giants of our field. He provided me with support and inspiration throughout my career and was an important model of a scholar who studied issues in classrooms. I will always remember writing to ask a question, thinking he was far too important a person to respond, but respond he did on an issue that I was struggling with in my work. It is a lesson I have always remembered. I try to pay forward, just as Bob did with so many of us. I shall miss him greatly.
Cheers,
Don

I received this note from Suzanne Barchers, the wife of Bob Calfee, late last night.
"Bob died at 8:00 Friday evening. He was peaceful, letting go quietly, while my son Jeff and I held his hands.
Thank you for all the wonderful messages and stories. He listened to all of them, squeezing my hand often. Like so many of you, I'll be saying, "Hmm...what would Bob say?" for many years to come.
Suzanne”
This was a great personal loss for me because in addition to being a great scholar, he was a mentor to me in the early years of my career and a great friend and colleague on any number of ventures. But it is also a loss for the field and for the scores of doctoral students he mentored at Stanford and also UC Riverside after his retirement from Stanford.
