Suzanne Barchers asked me to let you know that our RHOF colleague Bob Calfee is being treated for a form of cancer (peritoneal adenocarcinoma) somewhere in the abdominal track. The note from Suzanne below, from last Tuesday gives a details about the diagnosis, and the latest details on his progress will be posted regularly by Suzanne on Caring Bridge (Link pasted in below).
The best news is that he is now well enough to start the chemo treatments.

From October 7
Hi,
After four arduous days of no food and lots of attempts to prep Bob for the colonoscopy, it finally happened yesterday afternoon. There was no tumor. So, the likely source of the cancer is the thickened peritoneal wall. Diagnosis, although not totally pinned down (still waiting for more labs to confirm stage) is peritoneal adenocarcinoma. The way this has been explained to us is that the presenting cancerous nodules are too small for a biopsy--there is too much risk to Bob. This is evidently a rare cancer, and it's not uncommon for treatment to progress without having all the answer in hadn.
The ascites continues to build up in the abdomen, causing great pain and shortness of breath for Bob. He can't eat as a result. He will have the accumulation removed tomorrow, once the blood thinners have stopped working on him.
We have met with various Team Bob members, as I now plan to call them: an oncologist, oncology social worker, palliative care doctor, his attending doctor (called a hospitalist), and the nurse manager (trying to ameliorate the clumsy care to date).
Bob has enjoyed the cards he's gotten: 995 Wing Pl., Stanford, CA 94305. Funny ones are great. Thanks.
Suzanne
