In my ethical scheme, I can make a distinction between a commercial vendor buying an ad in an IRA media outlet (e.g., the convention program), in which case it is clear that this is an advertisement, and what Ray calls the "more than tacit approval" of a program. I'm not even sure about the empirical validation standard. Should IRA should be "cosponsoring" events for commerial products that HAVE met some standard of empirical validation? It is important, I think, to be clear when we are operating within a marketplace and when, within a setting in which professional knowledge is supposed to prevail.

Vicki,

Thank you for the clarification. I agree this matter should have received Board approval prior to launch. I think the concern here is the more than tacit approval by IRA of a commercial endeavor that lacks empirical validation which appears to be in conflict with IRA's own policies.

"In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."

Subject: [Reading-hall-of-fame] Literacy leadership institute

Hi everyone,

I am a new member of the Reading Hall of Fame, initiated into the group at the last convention. However, I was not a member of the listserv until just a few days ago. [perhaps my university sent the mail to spam!]. I am now on the listserv and I am just catching up with the recent discussion about IRA's involvement with the Literacy Leadership Institute with Valerie Ellery. This initiative is one of several developed by Mark Mullen, Interim Executive Director, without consultation with or approval from the IRA Board of Directors. We learned about this partnership through an email message Mark sent to inform the Board shortly before the email blast message was sent to the membership.

At our recent Board meeting, we asked Mark to bring all future initiatives that affect program development and financial commitments to the board for discussion and approval. It is our goal to inform and be informed of such ventures before a commitment is made.

In the meantime, I encourage you to share your concerns and perspectives with Mark. It is appropriate for him to understand the range of concerns that you have expressed; Mark Mullen <mmullen at reading.org>
