Folks: I am somewhat surprised to see the International Reading Association
sponsoring a program that will quote"engage the "Whole Learner" using
multiple intelligences"end quote. I have followed Howard Gardner's work on
multiple intellingences from its inception and have yet to find evidence
supporting it either conceptually or empirically as a basis for instruction
and I'm wondering if any of you have found evidence that I may have missed.
I'm also somewhat put-off by terms like the quote"Whole Learner"end quote
in professional development. That term seems to lack any sensible meaning
to me. What on earth is a "whole learner" ?

The International Reading Association is proud to partner with Valerie
Ellery for the Literacy Leadership Institute, K-12. This institute is
designed to empower literacy leaders with high-quality professional
development that will enhance teacher effectiveness and student
achievement.
Goals for the institute include:
· Discover how to motivate and engage the "Whole Learner" using
multiple intelligences
· Explore implications of the Common Core State Standards
· Analyze student scenarios for strengths and weaknesses to
effectively inform instruction
· Incorporate embedded technology in literacy content
· Apply strategies and techniques to raise students' reading and
writing achievement in word study, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
These goals and many others will be addressed with practical approaches
ready for classroom implementation. Clock hours will be awarded for
completion of the institute.
Enrollment is limited so early registration is recommended.
