Dear David,

Thank you for this wonderful bestowal as a way to celebrate your arrival into septuagenarianhood. I guess that my situation would be P.D.R.R. which is pronounced (pea DEE rrrrr rrrr) which doesn't quite have the distinguished ring of your set of initials. But as per your instructions, I shall use this honorary P when suffering from a variety of academic maladies which torment and afflict those of us in higher education....perhaps mostly when I take a look at my 401K that has over the years become a 201K, then a 301K and then once again a 401K of late. Thanks again, P. David!

Warmly,

Ray

Dear P. Hall of Fame colleagues,

I write to perform an official act for those of you unable to attend the ceremony commemorating my official entry into septuagenarianhood in Orlando--the bestowal of the honorary P.

An honorary P, especially when used as a first initial, is a useful asset that can be deployed during milestone, particularly high trauma potential, events in one's professional life. For instance, when you are experiencing self-doubt and minor bouts of colleague envy (to be distinguished from bouts of minor colleague envy), you can haul out your honorary P and join ranks with the likes of W. Somerset Maugham, F. Scott Fitzgerald, J. Edgar Hoover, H. Ross Perot, and S. Jay Samuels.

I must confess that the bestowal of the honorary P is not unique to me or this event. I first encountered such a bestowal in the mid to late 1970s on a visit to UW Madison when P. Wayne Otto, in introducing me at a graduate seminar, bestowed upon everyone in the audience an honorary P, giving rise to names like P. Thomas Barrett, P. Dale Johnson, P. Richard Smith, P. Patricia Anders (then a PhD student) and the like. I, of course, also received the honorary P, rendering my name P. P. David Pearson, which was immediately truncated to PPDP (pronounced pea pea DEE pea), a moniker that stuck with me for well over a decade. Fessing up to these historical roots is the least I can do for Hall of Fame members.

If you can put on the Reading Hall of Fame listserv, I would greatly appreciate it. It was a great party! P. Freddy

Dear Friends of PDP,

If you were at the party on Sunday evening in Orlando, you have already received your official "P." to put in front of your name. If you weren't at the event, P. David graciously has given all of his friends and colleagues permission to put a "P." in front of their names.

If you haven't already, PLEASE consider making a contribution to P. David's birthday Ning. Add a message, a photo, or a video. On May 31st, P. Gina Cervetti will offload the material into an e-book for P. David. Don't be left out!

You'll be hearing from me once more when we've got the link to the official picture gallery of the event. Thanks for your participation--at the event, in the Ning, or both.
