I agree the question is a good one. I am curious, as of now, where is
Cambourne on this issue. I do not have loss of memory yet. I recommended
that one look for research done in the 60's at UC Berkeley that might throw
some light on the issue. Here it is: Feedback of Speech Muscle Activity
during Silent Reading: Rapid Extinction Curtis D. Hardyck 1, Lewis F.
Petrinovich 1, and Delbert W. Ellsworth 1
I am not finished yet. Here is one way to think of the issue.. When you look
at a scene, do you engage in silent speech in order to understand what you
are seeing outdoors? I do not think so. There is instant recognition and
understanding. So the route for non verbal recognition and meaning is that
one goes directly from sight to meaning or understanding. Example S
[outdoor scene] ->MEANING.
However, when one looks at words [composed of letters] on a page, the
argument is that there is an intermediate step between word recognition and
meaning, and the intermediate stage is whatever you want to call it, silent
speech .
S [words]->silent speech->comprehension. This way of looking at the
issue suggests a dual coding theory, one for understanding what happens when
we view a scene outdoors and one when we try to understand the words in a
book. "Nough said. It has been raining here for days, my roof is leaking,
and I have to teach in a few hours. Jay samuels

Nice question Brian. You might look at Ushaa Goswami's chapter in the new
"Cambridge Handbook of Literacy" ( Olson & Torrance, Eds.). Best Regards,
DAvid
