Wayne Otto said I could foward this. Best, David

Dear Prof. Olson,
I don't think we ever met, but I can't resist sending you a personal
salute for you common sense view of Goodman's proposed research
direction. I retired from the reading faculty at the University of
Wisconsin thirteen years ago and I have been content to redirect my
interests since then. But I am still included among those who
receive RHF email, and I have been bothered by the Goodman proposal
and appalled by the generally positive response it has evoked from
the membership. Your point is well taken: Adequate resources and
competent teachers will make most any "program" succeed. More
research in pursuit of "the best program" will almost certainly
result in ties; and even if one or two turned out "better" there
would be no assurance that they would (or could) be replicated with
satisfactory results.
Here in Wisconsin we heard the sirens go off a while ago to warn us
of the possibility of tornadoes. But now that I have gotten all this
off my chest, I think I can see the sun beginning to peep through,
	Cheers, Wayne Otto
