One of our members, Martha King, passed away this past Friday.

She was a colleague and mentor to many of us---an extraordinary
person who was deeply committed to literacy, but moreover society and
people. She was an individual who had an enormously generous spirit
whose values and life have been inspirational to many of us

Here is the e-mail from OSU regarding services etc,,

Colleagues,

We are sorry to report that Dr. Martha King, professor emerita of
education, died Friday, March 16, on her 89th birthday.

Martha, who received a Ph.D. from Ohio State in 1957, was a pioneer
in language and literacy education. A faculty member from 1959-1982,
she supported projects that encouraged classroom and college teachers
to work together, with their interest in children as a common focus.
With Charlotte Huck, she created EPIC (Educational Programs in
Informal Classrooms), an innovative teacher education program.

Her peers recognized her with the National Council for Research in
the Teaching of English's highest award and with induction into the
International Reading Association's Hall of Fame.

The <http://www.teach-learn.org/mlk/home.html>Martha L. King Center
for Language and Literacies was named when she retired from Ohio
State. She received the college's most prestigious award in 1992,
when she was inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame.

After her retirement, Martha remained active in college programs and
alumni events. She also was a donor.

Condolences may be sent to Martha's friend, Mrs. Ann Olsen Lavelle,
20 McGuffey Lane, Athens, OH 45701.
