Dear Friends,

The current issue of Talking Points is being offered as a free trial by
NCTE so that members can see the value of subscribing to this journal
and becoming a member of WLU. Please get the word out (listserves and
other means) that NCTE members can access this free issue through the
NCTE INBOX (last item), or through the NCTE website.

As many of you know, Prisca Martens and I are now the editors of Talking
Points. Please consider submitting articles for publication in this
refereed journal, and encourage your colleagues and students to do so as
well. There's still a little time (till early June) for submission for
the next issue devoted to classroom practices inspired by the
ideological and theoretical perspectives of Louise Rosenblatt. Of
course, we are happy to consider a wide range of topics for other
upcoming issues. We have a sterling editorial board, with the likes of
Steve Krashen, Carole Edelsky, Susan Ohanian, Joanne Yatvin, Elisa
Waingort, Nancy Creech, and many others. We don't shrink away from
politically charged articles and proudly showcase whole language
pedagogy!! (Unlike other professional journals these days!).

I don't have to tell you how important it is to support WLU and its
journal. For the first time in several years, registration for our
summer conference is WAY UP, TAWL groups are forming and reforming, and
WLU is revitalized. Our President, Amy Flint, has been a miracle worker
in getting us back in the black, and our board is reconnecting with
membership through committees and outreach. I am so proud to be a part
of an organization that has weathered the storms (both external and
internal!) and is now on the move!!

Feel free to forward this message to anyone who might be interested!!!

Bess Altwerger

Everyone, I am co-editing an issue of the Literacy journal (UK) with
Viv Ellis (at Osford University) and Julia Jamston (University of
Melbourne). The theme for the journal is Teacher Education and
Professional Development. See call for papers attached.

Please consider submitting a paper for this journal... submission
data is November 30, 2005. Publication date is July 2006.

Please send me questions and/or an indication of your interest. We
will be glad to hear from you!

Vicki Risko
