Dear Colleagues:

You will want to watch the case now before the courts in Ontario that
charges that the literacy test, success on which is required for High
School diploma, is discriminatory. The case will go to the courts next
fall. The test is designed by an autonomous body EQAO (Educational
Quality Assessment Office) and given to every Grade 10 student. If they
fail they can re-take the test; if they still fail they can take a
literacy course, completion of which is taken as equivalent to passing the
test. Some groups claim that the test discriminates against some groups
of children.
