[A blue gloved hand holding a red, circular petri dish] [A small silver robot] A bustling audience at this year's Green Hustle With an estimated audience of 25,000 we were delighted to support this year's Green Hustle Festival for the second year running on Saturday 1 June. Held on the Old Market Square, in Nottingham City Centre, this popular event showcases the rich diversity of sustainability groups, creatives and other community organisations in Nottingham. One of the two community projects we funded included Research by Assistant Professor Stacie Stetkiewicz, from the School of Biosciences, in partnership with HoneyBee Farmacy was one of the two community projects we funded. The design and build of a pop-up garden demonstrated the different ways for people to grow a range of foods in accessible ways at home, with the garden donated to Welbeck Primary School, who will be using it in their school grounds to support children to learn about growing food. You can read more about our second funded project which saw Dr Katy Voisey, Associate Professor from the Faculty of Engineering, collaborate with The Friends of Wollaton Park to explore the mutually beneficial uses of leaves in the Spotlight on section of this newsletter. One of these research projects will see Dr Katy Voisey, Associate Professor from the Faculty of Engineering, collaborated with The Friends of Wollaton Park to explore the mutually beneficial uses of leaves. The project aims to allow better informed choices to be made about how leaf collection and disposal or conversion of leaves to other use, with two key ideas running through it: 1. investigating potential positive uses of a waste stream and, 2. incentivising collection of a material that can cause problems if left in place, such as hazardous, slippery wet leaves on pavements. ?An important aspect is life cycle analysis of potential usages of leaves and comparing this to simply allowing them to stay in place, rot and return nutrients to the ground" [A pair of muddy hands rolling soil into balls] Sharing the research Her project will focus on life cycle analysis of leaf usage versus natural decomposition, exploring leaves as corrosion inhibitors, backed by promising preliminary results. Katy and her team showcased their research findings at this year's Green Hustle Festival celebrations earlier this month. There were displays summarising the life cycle analysis of leaf uses and the experimental results, enhancing public understanding of this often-misunderstood term. "The project delivers case studies in life cycle analysis and promotes a sustainable way of considering waste raising awareness and understanding of these important concepts, thereby enhancing education of climate related concepts". Further details about the Institute's involvement in this year's festival can be found in the Institute's latest blog or by visiting our Green Hustle events webpage.
